HW 1/6

"Tous les israélites sont solidaires les uns des autres"

This is the French Motto of the Alliance Israélite Universelle , take your time with the translation. Grab a dictionary and do each word alone, before you do the whole sentence (same goes for google translate). Your questions are due by 11:59pm.

  1. "All of the Israelities are the solidarity of each other"

This institution was all about taming the savage and giving the Jews a certain image. Are they saying that the product of their school will save the image of the rest of the Jews? Are they sending a message to everyone that they will silence the anti semites by creating the "perfect" Jew and stamping out the old image of the "savage"? Do they realize that they are making a generalization and that they wont be able to change everyone, and that people will still have ill feelings about the Jews no matter how much they assimilate?

  2. Just popping the phrase into google translate you get “All Jews are supportive of each other” however looking at it word by word you find something interesting. the word “solidaires” or solitary. looking at the aforementioned the alliance seems to have have successfully separated and made Jews solitary from other people. could the alliance have brought the rumors of them and the protocols and other antisemitism upon themselves because the Jew now seemed more separated and mysterious rather than integrated and familiar?

  3. "All Jews are supportive of each other"
does this refer to the fact that all the alliance schools were connected and supported each other, or does it refer to how the schools wanted to teach their students to stand as one and work together?

  4. This phrase explains a lot on what we touched upon in class. All of the students of the Alliance Israelite Universelle had to abide by the same curriculum, all had to take French, all had to be uniform, even the Sephardic “barbarians”, no matter what culture in which they were raised. This Three Musketeers philosophy of “one for all and all for one” was obviously were acceptable by Jews who jumped at the opportunity to send their children to such a school and let Cremieux’s system grow exponentially.
Not surprisingly, the Alliance started some of the first schools in Israel (Then Palestine), the belief that all Jews should be bonded together can be a very Zionistic concept. However, this is not true in the uniformity of culture suggested by the Alliance. Like the United States, Israel is a melting pot many cultures. It is part Sephardic, Ashkenaz, Yeminite, Russian, American, Iranian, Ethiopian, etc.
Had the Alliance achieved its goal on all Israelites relying on one another, could the melting pot exist? If Israel was forced into a homogenized, French culture, would Israel even resemble in the slightest the country we see today. If all Israelis belonged to the same culture, how would that affect their problems with Arabs, would a more united front force their begrudging acceptance? Would Israel actually be better off?

  5. How did the gentiles react to this uprising of Jews? Did this heighten Antisemitism to a record peak? Hence the motto was "सभी यहूदियों एक दूसरे का समर्थन कर रहे हैं" (translated from French to Hindi)?

  6. The translation is “All Jews are supportive of each other”.

The Alliance Israélite Universelle is a institute that help Jews out in any way possible all over Europe. They tried to get as many rights as they can to help fellow Jews out around the world. They helped Jews who wanted to emigrate to another country and made schools and gave children a Jewish education. Why are the schools that they chose being so selective? All Jewish children need to learn and be educated. Also the school is very strict and is trying to make the students more secular in their educated and " Sexy" in style. Where they not proud to be Jewish even though they knew there were a lot of antisemitism they should have still kept the students more "Froom" and wanting to be Jewish instead of throwing them in school for 6 days a week with no time to grow in there Judaism. From the quote above we can see how it applies to this institution because all Jews are related and they want to help as many Jews out as they possibly can.

  7. I think the key words in the motto of the Alliance Israélite Universelle are "All" and "solidarity". The definition of solidarity according to dictionary.com is "union or fellowship arising from common responsibilities and interests, as between members of a group or between classes, peoples, etc." So in some ways, solidarity extends beyond simple unity-which could potentially be limited to a feeling that I am responsible for such and such person, whereas with "solidarity"-the emphasis appears to be on "responsibilities" and "interests" etc. The Alliance Israélite Universelle did in fact appear to embrace this interpretation of the motto, as exhibited through the Alliance schools they set up as a way of "taming" the "barbarism" of Sephardi culture and fostering the etiquette, the mannerisms, the interests of Western culture. This ironically suggests that the solidarity being dealt with is unfairly tilted in the favor of Western Judaism-without much compromise of culture by Western Jewry (of course this may not be entirely true but the Alliance schools do seem to indicate something of that sort) The other word "All" caught my attention in that it is entirely inclusive-no exceptions whatsoever. With these two things in mind, my question has to do with how the Alliance fit into the general movement of Orientalism. Taken together, the "All" and the sense of superiority of culture (that we must tame the other) seems to be in tune with the larger framework, but is that entirely true? Was it a product of its time or did it evolve entirely separately and from the purest of intentions? Likewise, was there any concern from the Alliance regarding the potential loss of genuine traditions around the globe through this homogenization process? In similar words, to what extent was this "solidarity" imposed on many cultures and to what extent did cultures embrace the opportunity to be "one" with their brethren? Why solidarity? And why now?

  8. Is this slogan derived from the hebrew phrase, "kol yisrael areivim zeh lazeh?"

  9. The main goal of the Alliance Israélite Universelle was to have Jews help other Jews feel comfortable and safe and part of a group during anti-Semitic times and situations. The alliance wanted to change the historical conditions of the Jews and to have the public support these efforts.
With the motto of "All Jews are Supportive of Each Other" shouldn't the alliance be worried that they're making themselves seem fine on their own? They are stating that they have each other's support but then stating that they want the public's help. If the alliances goal was to only gather Jews to help with the anti-semitism this motto would be perfect. But the alliance wants all public assistance and their motto should be a direct reflection of that rather than words that may imply that Jews have each other and that's all they need..
